Old Tennis Court Farm Protection Project

Here to stay: the community’s garden.

The community’s purchase of the Old Tennis Court Farm, the 0.65-acre parcel of land at 5407 Wissahickon Avenue, 19144, was executed on May 18, 2018.

Natural Lands made the purchase on behalf of the community with a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development’s Greenways, Trails and Recreation program and matching funds raised from the community.

The Old Tennis Court Farm community garden has been an affiliate of Neighborhood Gardens Trust since reopening in May 2017. Over the coming months, the title will be transferred to Neighborhood Gardens Trust, and the parcel will become part of NGT’s inventory of community gardens across the city.

This neighborhood asset is now here to stay.

We thank Germantown Friends School for giving the community the opportunity to purchase the land so that it could remain a community garden.

We thank the many people who provided support for this effort. From donations to letters of support, words of encouragement, and action on behalf of the project, so many people took action to help preserve this greenspace and save a thriving community garden.

We thank Germantown United for serving as fiscal sponsor for our community-based fundraising. And we thank especially Natural Lands and Neighborhood Gardens Trust for acting on the community’s behalf.

What’s next? There is much deferred maintenance to address, such as stabilizing the stone wall facing Wissahickon Avenue, as well as site repairs and improvements.
How can I help? Make a tax-deductible donation toward the purchase and rehabilitation of the Old Tennis Court Farm site through Germantown United CDC, the project’s fiscal sponsor. Contributions can be made online or by mail with the downloadable donation form.
